Nothing says “good morning” and brings you back home more than the delicious scent of a home-made breakfast. The nostalgia that comes with morning pancakes, crispy bacon, sweet syrup, our favorite silogs with eggs done just the way we like it, and hot chocolate is undeniable.
This is the kind of experience recreated by Belen Vergara Torres and Tina Torres-Santos at Mom and Tina’s Bakery Café. The café that started out as a small counter in Pasig now has 4 branches in South Triangle, Makati, Pasig, and Katipunan, still serving the same home-cooked goodness since 1996.
The amazing smells of their home-cooked meals greeted us as we entered the doors of the café. As we settle into our comfortable seats, the smell of something else wafted over, something freshly baked – the scent of some of their top-notch pastries, one of the things that made this homegrown café a staple for many. The unpretentious, simply-named menu reflects the uncomplicated style that has delighted diners for decades.
The Beehive Cupcake (Php 80.00) is our first pick. The royal icing coated with chocolate is so fine that it feels like it’s melting once you start tasting it. The presentation was also good and the melted chocolate frosting was prettily rustic and delicious. The texture of the cupcake bread was also soft and moist, giving an amazing mouthfeel when eaten with its fine frosting. Flavors aside, who wouldn’t fall in love with that adorable bee’s heart-shaped wings, cute stripes, and googly eyes?
For something savory, try the Mini Bacon and Spinach Quiche (Php 140.00). Its presentation is simple, but it packs amazing flavors of the salty bacon and mellow spinach. The flaky crust is perfect with the soft and smooth texture of the eggy center. Don’t be deceived by its size, it’s definitely filling.
We paired our quiche with the delightful Choco Mint Shake (Php 155.00), not too sweet, the mint flavor perfectly mixed into the sweetness of the chocolate shake.
Bonus: the last piece that we tried was from their Bars and Pastries section – their Dark Choco Chunk Brownies (Php 35.00), which according to the waiters was their bestseller. We tried it and realized exactly why. The pure dark chocolate chunk inside it makes every small bite so good, we could have finished a dozen.
